The Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan is going to air on FOX in the US this weekend! That’s FOX! Not FOX Soccer Channel, not FOX Soccer Plus, not FOX Sports Net but but big daddy FOX!
When ESPN had the Champions League I don’t think they ever put the finals on ABC so this is a big play by them. Of course the cynic in me sees this as a blatant attempt to take advantage of the increased exposure the sport is getting in the run-up to the World Cup Finals in South Africa, but the soccer fan in me doesn’t care. This is awesome.
On the other hand, I’m a little apprehensive as to what soccer will look like when it’s been FOXified. Will they put comet tails on the ball like they did with ice hockey? Will the NFL robots juggle the ball on screen during stoppages? My fingers are crossed for a simple airing of the European feed. We don’t need American announcers ruining this for everyone!
